JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL | ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS
Location: JACKSON R-II School District
Size: 48,000 sf
cost: $10,900,000
Following the establishment of an extensive 10-year long range facility plan for the Jackson R-II School District, voters approved Proposition J in 2017, a $22 million bond issue, which included the demolition of one of the original 1920’s school buildings known as “Old A”, and the addition of a new school in its place.
Though necessary, the prospect of a brand-new school taking the place of the historic 1920’s landmark was a source of heartache for many within the Jackson community. The original building was not operational due to a number of deficiencies, including very low floor to floor heights making modernization more complicated and expensive, mold throughout, and it did not meet seismic code.
With the district needs and community concerns at the forefront, iDS designed a school that is reminiscent of Old A, without compromising the future-ready needs of students and teachers. This was achieved by integrating 21st century learning programs and functions into the historical 1920’s style design of the “J Wing”, which is now utilized by 9-12 grade levels. Among the many building enhancements was a new entry, learning stair, and renovations to SPED areas, admin suite, kitchen.
